If you live in Delhi NCR, chances are you already own at least one air purifier. Maybe one in the bedroom, one in the living room, one wherever the air feels heaviest. It's become a normal part of surviving the winter months here. But there's a quiet problem with this approach that most people never stop to examine: a room purifier only ever solves part of the problem, in part of your home.
What a room purifier actually does
A typical room air purifier works by pulling in the air that's already inside the room, passing it through a filter, and pushing it back out — again and again. This is called recirculation. It's effective at reducing particulate matter like dust and PM2.5 within that one enclosed space, which is why purifiers do genuinely help with visible haze and allergens.
But recirculation has a built-in limitation: it can only clean the air that's already there. It can't bring in anything new. Over time, in a closed room with the windows shut (as they usually are during high-pollution months), this creates a second, less talked-about problem.
The stuffiness nobody explains
Every person in a room is constantly breathing out carbon dioxide. In a sealed space with no fresh air exchange, CO₂ concentration climbs steadily over hours. This is measured against a long-standing benchmark called the Pettenkofer number — 1,000 parts per million of CO₂, a threshold identified back in 1858 as the line between "good" and "poor" indoor air, and still referenced in indoor air quality research today.
A room purifier does nothing to address this. It can make the air look and smell cleaner while CO₂ quietly climbs past healthy levels — which often shows up not as a dramatic symptom, but as something more familiar: tiredness, a heavy head, or trouble concentrating by mid-afternoon.
The room-by-room problem
The second issue is coverage. A purifier in the living room does nothing for the bedroom. Move to a different part of the house, and you're either without protection, or you need another unit — switched on, and given time to catch up before the air in that room is genuinely clean.
For a household that moves between rooms all day, as most do, this means there's rarely a point where the entire home is actually at a healthy air quality level at the same time.
What "whole-home" actually changes
A whole-home fresh air system works on a different principle entirely: instead of recirculating what's already indoors, it draws in outside air, filters it through multiple stages, and delivers it across the entire property from a single unit. This means:
- Every room is covered at the same time, not one at a time
- Fresh air replaces stale air, so CO₂ doesn't quietly build up
- There's no need to manage or switch on multiple units as you move through your home
It's a genuinely different category of product, even though "air purifier" gets used loosely to describe both. Room purifiers still have their place — but for anyone trying to protect an entire home or office, they were never designed to do that job alone.
